West Wilts Hockey Club Safeguarding and Welfare

West Wilts Hockey Club is fully committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all its members, particularly children, young people, and vulnerable adults. We recognise our responsibility to safeguard and promote welfare in line with the standards set by England Hockey.

Our Commitment

We adhere to the England Hockey Safeguarding Policy, which outlines best practice for creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all participants. This includes:

  • SafeGuard Standards: We implement England Hockey’s SafeGuard framework, which provides role-specific guidance for coaches, welfare officers, junior organisers, parents, and club officials. This ensures everyone understands their responsibilities in safeguarding.
  • DBS Checks: All individuals working with young people or vulnerable adults undergo Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, as required by England Hockey. We maintain up-to-date records and ensure checks are renewed in accordance with policy.
  • Safeguarding Training: Club personnel complete appropriate safeguarding training courses, including Time to Listen and Safeguarding & Protecting Children, to ensure they are equipped to identify and respond to welfare concerns.
  • Welfare Officer: West Wilts Hockey Club has a designated Club Welfare Officer, who acts as the first point of contact for any safeguarding concerns. This individual is trained and supported to carry out their role effectively.
  • Reporting and Procedures: We follow England Hockey’s procedures for reporting concerns, including the use of the EH Ethics and Welfare Team and external safeguarding bodies when necessary. All concerns are treated seriously and handled confidentially.
  • Mental Wellbeing: We promote mental wellbeing through England Hockey’s Goal in Mind initiative, recognising the importance of emotional health in sport.
  • Policies and Codes of Conduct: The club has clear policies on behaviour, anti-bullying, equality, and inclusion. All members are expected to uphold these standards.

Creating a Safe Environment

We believe safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Through education, vigilance, and a culture of openness, West Wilts Hockey Club strives to ensure that hockey is a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
