The Garrison community in Warminster has paid a fitting tribute to one of its most dedicated figures, Lieutenant Colonel R.T. Jones of the Rifles, by naming the hockey pitch used by West Wilts Hockey Club in his honour. The recognition reflects not only his distinguished military career, but also his unwavering commitment to community sport and his determination to make hockey accessible to all.

Lt Col Jones has long been a central figure in fostering stronger links between the Army and the local civilian community. Through his leadership and personal drive, hockey has become a cornerstone of that relationship. His efforts have ensured that the sport is not confined to traditional pathways, but instead open and welcoming to people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

Under his guidance, the Garrison has worked closely with West Wilts Hockey Club to create opportunities for participation that extend beyond the barracks. From encouraging junior engagement to supporting grassroots development, Lt Col Jones has consistently championed inclusivity and accessibility.

His influence has been instrumental in strengthening the partnership between military personnel and the local hockey community, creating a model of cooperation that continues to deliver tangible benefits.

The decision by the Army to name the pitch after Lt Col Jones is therefore seen as both a recognition of past achievements and a lasting symbol of his legacy. It cements his contribution within the physical fabric of the Garrison while serving as an inspiration to others to continue his work.

Members of West Wilts Hockey Club have also expressed their appreciation, noting the transformative impact his involvement has had. Increased participation, improved community engagement, and a shared sense of purpose between club and Garrison.

West Wilts wishes Roy all the best for his future endeavors and thank you for being a great advocate for hockey and our club.
