West Wilts Hockey Club Hosts 'Ease Into Umpiring' to Inspire New and Developing Officials
West Wilts Hockey Club recently opened its doors for a special “Ease Into Umpiring” evening, an event designed to encourage new umpires to step forward while strengthening the confidence and skills of the club’s existing officials. Led by the ever‑knowledgeable and highly respected Martin Allsop, the session delivered a relaxed yet insightful masterclass that left participants buzzing with motivation.
With the club continuing to grow and the modern game becoming faster and more demanding, strong umpiring has never been more important. The evening set out to demonstrate that umpiring is accessible, enjoyable, and open to anyone, whether you’re a player considering giving it a try or an experienced umpire seeking to refine your approach.
Martin delivered the session with clarity, humour, and a deep understanding of the game, creating a relaxed environment where newcomers felt comfortable asking questions and current umpires could reflect on their own match-day habits.
Throughout the evening, Martin guided participants through the core foundations of effective umpiring. He explored the principles behind confident decision‑making, discussed how positioning can make officiating easier and more accurate, and demonstrated the importance of communication both with players and with a fellow umpire.
The group also delved into real‑match scenarios, looking at how to interpret fast, fluid game moments such as aerial balls, the use of advantage, and managing pressure inside the circle. The practical examples helped simplify difficult situations and gave everyone a clearer understanding of how to maintain control while keeping the game flowing
A key focus of the evening was the importance of building a supportive and sustainable umpiring community at West Wilts HC. The club is committed to helping new umpires feel confident and valued, providing mentoring opportunities and encouraging a culture where officials can continue to grow.
The session emphasised how vital umpires are to every fixture across the club, highlighted the support available to anyone interested in getting involved, and showcased the benefits of having a strong network of knowledgeable officials who can share advice and guidance. Many attendees left the session feeling inspired to take the next step in their umpiring journey.
What’s Next?
Following the positive feedback, West Wilts HC plans to host further development evenings, offer additional pitch‑side mentoring, and provide opportunities for new umpires to shadow more experienced officials on matchdays.
A huge thank you goes to Martin for delivering such an informative and enjoyable masterclass, and to everyone who came along with enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. Together, we are building a confident, capable, and well-supported umpiring team that will continue to strengthen the future of the club.
