West Wilts Hockey Club – A Proud Legacy
Founded in 1899 as Trowbridge Hockey Club, the club originally played at the County Cricket Ground. After disbanding during WWII, it was revived in 1962, briefly relocating to Westbury before returning to Trowbridge in the early 1980s.
In 1975, the club adopted the name West Wilts Hockey Club to reflect its growing membership from across the Bath–Swindon–Salisbury triangle. A major turning point came in 1981, when the club partnered with Trowbridge Cricket Club to form the Trowbridge Cricket and Sports Club, investing £50,000 in ground improvements. The addition of Trowbridge Ladies Hockey Club in 1983 further strengthened the club’s community presence.
Sponsorships followed, first with White Horse Windows Ltd. (1983–1988), during which the club was known as White Horse West Wilts, and later with Bishop Longbotham and Bagnall, a local law firm.
As artificial turf became essential for competitive hockey in the 1990s, the club played at various venues including Bath schools, Dauntsey’s, and Warminster School. In 1996, West Wilts settled in Warminster, sharing facilities with the cricket club and formally merging its men's and women's sections.
Though an astro pitch was eventually built in Trowbridge, Warminster remained the club’s hub, with matches split between Warminster School and the Army Training Centre. The opening of a new pitch at Kingdown School further solidified this base, becoming the primary venue for training and matches.
In 2023, the club renewed its partnership with the Garrison Pitch at the Land Warfare Centre, enhancing its community ties and expanding training and match opportunities.
